Nel pieno della settimana di apertura del WEC 2025 in Qatar, ecco la nostra intervista in esclusiva a Jenson Button, pilota Cadillac e campione di F1.
Con i risultati archiviati nel Prologo dell’ultimo fine settimana, Cadillac si prepara a gareggiare come nuova vettura del Team Jota. Questa “fusione” ha portato già i suoi frutti positivi nell’off-season, così come appunto nelle 4 sessioni del 21 e del 22 febbraio.
I piloti annunciati per la formazione di quest’anno saranno Will Stevens, Norman Nato, Earl Bamber, Alex Lynn, Sébastien Bourdais e appunto Jenson Button, campione del mondo di Formula 1 nel 2009 con Brawn GP e pilota a tempo pieno in WEC dallo scorso anno.
Dopo gli ottimi risultati ottenuti con i test di inizio stagione, che fanno ben sperare il team per la 1812 km di venerdì 28, abbiamo intervistato il britannico in merito a questa transizione in fatto di vettura e alle sue sensazioni per la nuova stagione.

TSOS: Come avete vissuto la transizione da Porsche a Cadillac in off-season?
Jenson Button: “Benissimo! Devo dire che le due macchine hanno degli stili di guida diversi.
Non sono riuscito a testarla abbastanza nei primi test, solo per 40 giri prima dell’arrivo in Qatar. Ecco perché il Prologo è stato molto utile. Il team è riuscito a organizzare gli equipaggi per le macchine velocemente. E personalmente parlando, mi piace come funziona la macchina.
Ci sono alcuni punti che devo ancora rivedere personalmente, ma per il resto mi trovo bene, sia con la vettura che con il team.”
TSOS: Hai due nuovi compagni di squadra: Sébastien Bourdais, che è stato tuo avversario in Formula 1, e Alex Lynn. Come ti trovi al loro fianco?
Jenson Button: “Mi trovo molto bene. Gareggiai contro Sébastien ancora prima della Formula 1, a Macao nel 1999. Ci fu un grosso incidente in pista, ma per fortuna non si fece nulla. Una delle macchine andò a urtare contro il cockpit e danneggiò la sua fibra di carbonio.
Poi ci siamo ritrovati in Formula 1. Era ancora lì nella stagione in cui vinsi il campionato (2009, ndr.).
È sempre bello poter lavorare con piloti pieni di esperienza come questi. Loro gareggiano già da anni con la Cadillac, e infatti sto imparando molto da loro. Sono molto disponibili, soprattutto Earl (Bamber), in fatto di stile di guida e di capire cosa va o cosa non va con la macchina. Abbiamo già un’ottima sintonia e capiamo bene quali sono i nostri compromessi.”
TSOS: Quale circuito del WEC rappresenterà, secondo te, la sfida più difficile in Cadillac?
Jenson Button: “Visto come sta andando in Qatar, inserirei appunto questo tra i circuiti in cui andiamo abbastanza bene. Direi anche Le Mans per la prestazione dello scorso anno, nonostante non abbia raggiunto il risultato finale sperato.
Penso che Imola abbia un circuito abbastanza difficile per tutti. Stiamo ancora cercando di tirare fuori il pieno potenziale di questa macchina, ma quella di Imola si prospetta una gara difficile. Speriamo in buoni risultati anche a Spa, soprattutto per come è andata la Cadillac lo scorso anno. Anche sul circuito del Fuji dovremmo andare bene.
Forse la tappa più difficile dopo Imola è quella in Bahrain. A giudicare dalle difficoltà della macchina lo scorso anno potremmo riscontrare non poche difficoltà, ma vedremo.”
TSOS: Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi per questa stagione?
Jenson Button: “Vincere gare e, se tutto va bene, competere per il titolo. Siamo un team con una grande macchina al nostro seguito, e siamo un buon punto di partenza. Come team, vedremo di massimizzare tutto ciò che abbiamo.”

TSOS: How have you experienced the transition from Porsche to Cadillac?
Jenson Button: “Really good, actually. You know, the two cars have very different driving styles.
I was poorly at one of the tests, so I couldn’t do it. So, I only did 40 laps in the car before I actually came here to Qatar. So, the Prologue was a big thing for me. You know, it was an important test. I feel that the team have gotten to groups of the car quickly, and personally, I like the way that the car feels.
I think that there’s still a few areas I can work on personally within the car, but I feel very at home within the car and also within the team.”
TSOS: Two new teammates: Sébastien Bourdais, who was your opponent in F1 and Alex Lynn. How are you getting along with them?
Jenson Button: “Really good. I raced against Sebastian Bodey in 1999, actually, in Macau. I remember he had an accident, he was okay, but had a big accident when one of the cars came inside the cockpit and damaged his carbon fiber. So, that’s the first time I raced against him and then, um, we raced together, in F1. When I won the World Championship, he was actually in F1 that season.
It’s really good working with such experienced drivers. You know, both of them have worked, um, for many years with Cadillac. They’ve raced endurance racing for many years. So their knowledge is great, and I’m actually learning a lot from them. They’ve been very open, very helpful, especially Earl (Bamber) in terms of driving style and what works with this car and what doesn’t.
We have a good understanding of what each other likes, and how we’re able to compromise.”
TSOS: Based on your experience during the Prologue, without giving away any state secrets, which tracks do you think will present a challenge and which tracks do you think will favor our package this season?
Jenson Button: “We seemed good here in the Prologue in Qatar. So, I would put this as one of our better circuits.
Le Mans is a circuit where Cadillac went well out last year. They didn’t get the result in the end, but in terms of the outright pace, the car was there and qualifying. So that would be a good race. I think Imola is a tough track for everyone. I think it’s tough for the LMDh cars. The LMH cars seem to be able to ride curbs a lot better with forward drive and front differentials. We’ll still get the best out of this car, but you know, Imola might not be the easiest.
Then we have Spa, it’s a nice, fast flowing track. The car looked competitive last year, so hopefully we can we can carry on that performance and and be fighting at the front. Fuji will be all right, I think.
I think, Bahrain would be the next tricky one after Imola. Looking at how the car worked last year and comments from the drivers, it’s not the easiest track for this car, but we’ll see.”
TSOS: What are your personal goals for this season?
Jenson Button: “To win races and, hopefully, fighting for the championship. You gotta be bullish. We’re a manufacturer that has a very good car underneath us. We’ve got a very good starting point. So, just as a team, we need to make sure we maximize what we have.”
