La nostra intervista a Collin DiGalbo, quarterback dei Dolphins Ancona per la nostra rubrica Man Of the Week!
Collin DiGalbo, import Dolphins dal 2021 è attualmente alla quarta stagione consecutiva con la franchigia di Ancona. Leader indiscusso dell’attacco marchigiano, Collin ha condotto i Dolphins alla seconda vittoria stagionale, posizionando la squadra in vetta alla classifica dietro solo agli Skorpions Varese.
Questo Weekend i Dolphins sono riusciti a battere i campioni in carica, i Panthers Parma, che iniziano questa stagione con una bruciante sconfitta subita al cardiopalma.
Dopo la prima vittoria, il team nero argento è attualmente 1-1 e vorrà sicuramente rifarsi nel prossimo Weekend. La vittoria, arrivata dopo un passaggio provvidenziale proprio di Collin DiGalbo, è stata raggiunta allo scadere dopo una conversione da 2 punti.

Intervista a Collin DiGalbo, QB dei Dolphins Ancona
TSOS: Ciao Collin, dal 2021 hai sposato la causa Dolphins e ormai sei un punto fermo dello spoiatoio, cosa ti ha fatto restare così tanto ad Ancona?
Collin DiGalbo: “I cittadini e la città di Ancona mi hanno reso semplice tornare anno dopo anno. Il modo in cui le persone ti accolgono come uno di loro, rende davvero facile e speciale poter giocare per i Dolphins. I miei compagni di squadra sono più simili ai miei fratelli e da quando sono arrivato qui nel 2021, posso dire che fanno più parte della mia famiglia piuttosto che semplici compagni di squadra.”
T: Il campionato italiano ha ormai imparato a conoscerti, ma tu in questi 2 anni cosa hai imparato dal campionato italiano?
CDG: “Ho imparato che l’IFL è piena di grandi giocatori e grandi allenatori. Amano il gioco proprio come tutti gli altri giocatori e lo giocano altrettanto duramente. È incredibile vedere il gioco del football americano amato e combattuto in Italia.”
T: In questo campionato siete già 2-0 e temporaneamente in vetta alla classifica, secondo te dove potete arrivare quest’anno?
CDG: “Lo prendiamo sempre un giorno e una settimana alla volta, concentrandoci su ciò che abbiamo di fronte. Da quando sono qui, siamo migliorati sempre di più, arrivando alle semifinali per due anni consecutivi. Penso decisamente che siamo pronti a fare il passo successivo e arrivare alla vittoria del campionato, purché continuiamo a giocare insieme e a dare il massimo.”
T: La partita con Parma rappresenta sicuramente uno degli scontri più interessanti visti in IFL di questo inizio campionato regalando una partita intensa e piena di emozioni, come è stato per te viverla da dentro?
CDG: “È stata sicuramente una delle partite più emozionanti a cui abbia mai preso parte in tutta la mia carriera da giocatore. È stata una grande partita combattuta duramente da entrambe le parti e poterne uscire con una vittoria è stata una delle emozioni più grandi.”
T: Siete riusciti a vincere contro la squadra più importante del nostro campionato che, tra l’altro, proviene da una stagione clamorosa culminata col titolo di campioni d’Italia. Quale è il trucco per sconfiggere i Panthers?
CDG: “I Panthers sono un’ottima squadra, allenata molto bene e composta da ottimi giocatori. È una squadra che commette pochissimi errori e, per battere qualsiasi buona squadra, devi approfittarne quando arriva un’opportunità. La nostra difesa ha giocato una grande partita e alla fine ci ha dato un’ultima opportunità e per fortuna ne abbiamo approfittato.”
T: La conversione da 2 punti nel finale ha rappresentato un rischio incredibile, ma che vi ha premiato meritatamente, puoi raccontarci quell’ultima azione?
CDG: “Non c’erano dubbi nella mente di nessuno a bordo campo sul fatto che non avremmo segnato i 2 punti. Pratichiamo continuamente situazioni come le conversioni da 2 punti e per fortuna tutto quel duro lavoro ha dato i suoi frutti. Questo è solo un passo nella direzione in cui vogliamo andare, c’è ancora molto lavoro da fare e continueremo a spingere per migliorare rispetto al giorno prima.”

T: Hi Collin, since 2021 you have embraced the Dolphins cause and you are now a pillar of the club, what made you stay in Ancona for so long?
Collin DiGalbo: “The people of Ancona, and the city of Ancona have made it easy for me to come back year after year. The way the people embrace you as one of their own, really makes it easy and so special to be able to play for the Dolphins. My teammates, are more like my brothers, and since I’ve gotten here in 2021, I can say they’re more of my family rather than just teammates.”
T: The Italian championship has now learned to know you, but what have you learned from the Italian championship in these 2 years?
CDG: “I’ve learned that the IFL is full of great players, and great coaches. They love the game just like any other players, and they play it just as hard. It’s amazing to see the game of American football being loved and fought for in Italy.”
T: In this championship you are already 2-0 and temporarily at the top of the table, where do you think you can go this year?
CDG: “We always take it one day, and one week at a time, focusing on what’s in front of us. Since I’ve been here, we’ve gotten better and better, making it to the semi finals two years in a row. I definitely think we’re ready to take that next step and make it to the Championship, as long as we keep playing together, and giving it our all”.
T: The match against Parma certainly represents one of the most interesting matches seen in the IFL at the beginning of the season, offering an intense match full of emotions. What was it like for you to experience it as a protagonist?
CDG: “It was definitely one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of in my whole football career. It was a great game fought hard on both sides, and to be able to come out of that with a victory, was one of the greatest feelings.”
T: You managed to win against the reigning champions, capable of playing a sensational 2023. What is the key to defeating the Panthers?
CDG: “The panthers are a really good team, who are coached very well and have some great players. They’re a team who makes very little mistakes, and In order to beat any good team, you need to take advantage when an opportunity arrives. Our defense played a great game, and gave us a final opportunity at the end, and we thankfully took advantage of it.”
T: The 2-point conversion at the end represented an incredible risk, but it deservedly rewarded you, can you tell us about that last action?
CDG: “There was no doubt in anyone’s mind on our sideline that we weren’t going to be going for the 2-point. We practice situations such as 2-point conversions all the time in practice, and thankfully all that hard work paid off. This is just a step in the direction we want to be going, a lot of hard work still needs to get done, and we’re going to keep on pushing to be better than we were the day before.”
