La nostra intervista in esclusiva a Paul-Loup Chatin, pilota francese per il team Alpine in WEC, dalla 6 ore di Imola.
Noi di The Shield Of Sports, presenti a Imola per seguire questo weekend importantissimo, abbiamo avuto l’onore di poter intervistare il francese Chatin, campione IMSA 2023 per la categoria LMP2 che ha recentemente ripreso la carriera in WEC con le Hypercar.
Egli condivide la sua avventura in Alpine assieme a piloti del calibro di Mick Schumacher. Dopo aver intervistato il pilota tedesco, vi riporteremo ora qui sotto l’intervista al suo compagno di squadra.
Ancora una volta, ringraziamo il team Alpine per averci concesso l’intervista. Senza perdere altro tempo, ecco l’intervista che Chatin ha rilasciato nella giornata di ieri.
L’intervista a Paul-Loup Chatin
TSOS: Qual è il tuo obiettivo primario per il campionato WEC 2024?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “Il mio obiettivo primario è migliorare di gara in gara. Per noi questo è un anno di apprendimento, e dobbiamo essere in grado di progredire e risolvere qualsiasi problema. Ciò che voglio e fare sempre un passo avanti a ogni gare.”
TSOS: Hai alle spalle una lunga storia con Alpine, dal 2014 nella categoria LMP2, che ti ha portato ad ottenere diversi podi a Le Mans. Come hai trovato la transizione da LMP2 a LMdH?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “È una macchina totalmente diversa. Mi sembra un misto tra una macchina di Gran Turismo e un prototipo LMP2. È un po’ più pesante e diversa da guidare rispetto a una vettura LMP2, ma non ci sto mettendo molto a familiarizzare con essa.
Ovviamente è molto più potente, e piena di comandi al suo interno da impostare. Nelle vetture LMP2 non ci sono così tanti comandi, qui invece sì e devi giocarci un po’ più spesso. In Qatar è stato semplice per fortuna, perché il percorso era pieno di rettilinei ed era abbastanza largo.
Qui ad Imola è diverso, non ci sono rettilinei. Anche se ne trovassi uno, si sarebbero comunque alcune curve. Perciò qui è un po’ più tosta averci a che fare, è comunque una bella sfida e mi piace, ma devo restare concentrato e continuare a migliorare.”
TSOS: L’ultima vittoria per Alpine a Le Mans risale al 1978. Pensi che la A424 possa portarti alla vittoria?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “Lo spero. Ogni volta che iniziamo una gara, quello che vogliamo è vincere. Ma dobbiamo anche essere onesti con noi stessi e tener conto della posizione in cui ci troviamo ora rispetto agli altri piloti. Sicuramente sarà dura, ma il nostro obiettivo è farci trovare sempre più pronti per l’anno successivo.
Sono molto confidente in questo: abbiamo dei buoni comandi, una buona vettura e un team forte. Se sono qui, nonostante la grossa sfida che ci troviamo davanti, è perché confido che riusciremo a farcela.”
TSOS: Hai guadagnato i tuoi primi punti in Qatar dopo un lungo periodo di sviluppi nel quale sei stato anche coinvolto. Che sensazioni hai provato a fine gara?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “Una bella sensazione. Il nostro obiettivo era quello di fare una gara pulita senza errori, e sfruttare tutte le opportunità a disposizione per concludere come meglio potevamo. La settima posizione era il miglior risultato che potevamo ottenere, anche in base al nostro programma.
Se riusciremo a continuare così, saremo in grado di portarci a casa un po’ di punti. Quindi bene così, ma è solo il primo passo.”
TSOS: Cosa significa per un pilota francese rappresentare la nazione in un auto del tutto francese?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “Nel mio sangue scorre il colore blu dell’Alpine. Sono orgoglioso di essere francese, della storia motoristica di un band francese come Alpine e di poterne fare parte. Far parte di questo grande team con questa grande macchina è qualcosa che faccio ormai da tanti anni. Se sono riuscito a raggiungere le principali categorie, lo devo all’Alpine.
Gareggerò per la prima volta a Le Mans, il che rende questo ancora più speciale. Se siamo qui alla fine è per Le Mans.”

Paul-Loup Chatin’s interview
TSOS: What is your main goal for the 2024 WEC season?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “My main goal is to improve (our performance) race after race. It’s a learning year for us, and we know that. We have to ensolve issues. What I want is, at each race, to do a step forward.”
TSOS: You have a long history with Alpine, since 2014 with LMP2, which brought you podium finishes at Le Mans. What was the transition from LMP2 to LMdH like?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “It’s completely a different car. To be honest, I think it’s right in the middle between the GT car and the prototype LMP2 car. It’s a bit heavier, so it’s a bit different to drive compared to the LMP2, but I started to be more confident with the car and to be able to push more.
Of course, it’s really powerful, we have also a lot of tools inside the car that we have to adjust. In LMP2 I didn’t have so many tools, now we have to play a lot with ’em. On some tracks like Qatar it was easy because the track was full on straight lines and it was quite large.
Here at Imola you have no straight lines, and even if you find a straight line you still have some corners. So it’s a bit harder to adjust everything there. It’s a good challenge, I like it, but I need to be woke and to be better.”
TSOS: The last Le Mans win for Alpine has been missing since 1978. Do you think the A424 can bring you back to victory?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “I hope so. Every time we have to start a race, what we want is to win. We have to be honest with ourselves, where we are right now compared to the competitors. So for sure this year it will be tough and difficult. But our goal is to be more ready for next year.
I’m very confident: we have good tools, a good car and a strong team. I know it’s a challenge, but if I’m here it’s because I’m very confident that we can make it.”
TSOS: You scored your first points in Qatar after a long period of development in which you were personally involved: what was your feeling at the end of the race?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “It was a good feeling. Our goal was to do a clean race without any mistakes, and to try to use all the opportunities in the race to finish (as best we could). I think that to finish P7 was the best result possible to achieve at the time of our program.
If we do well, we can gain some good points. So it was good, but it was also the first step.”
TSOS: What does it mean for a French driver to represent the nation in a totally French car?
Paul-Loup Chatin: “I have the blue of Alpine in my blood. I’m proud to be French, I’m proud of motorsport history of a French brand like Alpine. To be part of this beautiful team with this beautiful car is something that I’ve done for many years. If I reached the top categories it’s because of Alpine.
For the first time I will drive at Le Mans, which makes this more special. At the end, if we are it’s for Le Mans.”
