Direttamente dalla 6 ore di Imola, la nostra intervista in esclusiva a Mick Schumacher, pilota Alpine per il WEC.
Oggi abbiamo avuto l’onore di intervistare il pilota Alpine direttamente durante la 6 ore di Imola. Il pilota ci ha parlato della vettura con cui corre il campionato WEC, dei suoi obiettivi per la Le Mans 2024 e dei rivali per questa stagione.
Ringraziamo Alpine per averci concesso l’intervista. Ma bando alle ciance, ecco a voi la nostra intervista a Mick Schumacher.
L’intervista a Mick Schumacher
TSOS: L’Alpine 424 è una vettura giovane e ha bisogno di esperienza, quali sono i punti cruciali da migliorare per essere competitivi?
Mick Schumacher: “E’ una bella domanda. Come hai detto, la macchina è molto giovane e non abbiamo ancora fatto molta esperienza con essa. Il team ha tanta esperienza, a differenza della vettura.
Quello che è abbiamo fatto in Qatar è avvenuto perché siamo stati fortunati. Il prologo ci ha aiutati a impostare la macchina nella maniera più ideale per quel percorso. Ora qui il tempo in pista è minore e non poco, e anche se non abbiamo avuto bisogno di impostare la macchina ulteriormente durante la pratica o le qualificazioni, sarà una bella sfida.
Una delle cose positive è che è stato rilevante in Qatar. Speriamo lo stesso anche per domani o per circuiti come Spa, Le Mans, Fuji e Bahrain.”
TSOS: Quale circuito della stagione WEC 2024 temi di più per la sua difficoltà?
Mick Schumacher: “Non credo ci sia un percorso di cui aver paura. Per è questione di esperienza. Percorsi come Imola o Sao Paulo sono molto stretti e meno lunghi, e questo rappresenta un potenziale pericolo per le hypercar.”
TSOS: Che tipo di allenamento serve per prepararsi a una gara di Endurance? Quanto è importante l’alimentazione?
Mick Schumacher: “In termini di preparazione è più o meno lo stesso, forse siamo più concentrati ad allenare la nostra durabilità e la nostra resistenza, ma non ho trovato cambiamenti drastici. Per quanto riguarda la nutrizione, non c’è molto tempo tra le varie sessioni.
Preferisco più passare il tempo con i miei ingegneri e dormire bene che mangiare. Ma devo ancora ambientarmi bene in Endurance.”
TSOS: Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi per la 24H di Le Mans 2024?
Mick Schumacher: “Non ci sono mai stato, ma posso dire con certezza che il nostro obiettivo come team è essere competitivi e raggiungere il traguardo. Ho due piloti maturi e con grande esperienza al mio fianco (Nicholas Lapierre e Matthieu Vaxiviere) che hanno già gareggiato altre volte insieme a Le Mans.
Spero di imparare molto da loro in quel periodo, e spero anche che saremo in grado di ottenere un buon risultato.”
TSOS: Quali squadre consideri rivali diretti per questa stagione del WEC?
Mick Schumacher: “Per noi conta più migliorare noi stessi e porci in una posizione in cui siamo soddisfatti con la nostra strategia e il modo in cui impostiamo la macchina. Prima ancora di pensare alla competizione là fuori, dobbiamo concentrarci su noi stessi.”
TSOS: La pratica è andata molto bene, ma oggi, alle qualifiche, Alpine si è ritrovata distante dalle altre vetture. Cosa prevedi per la gara di domani?
Mick Schumacher: “Difficile da dire, soprattutto perché le condizioni meteorologiche sono cambiate. Rispetto agli altri, non sappiamo a che punto ci troveremo in termini di strategia. Come ho detto, ci concentreremo su noi stessi e faremo in modo di mettere a punto le cose pianificate.
Le qualifiche, solitamente, rappresentano una piccola parte, ma qui a Imola è una delle parti più importanti.”

TSOS: Alpine is a young car and needs experience, what are the crucial points to improve to be competitive?
Mick Schumacher: “That’s a good question. I mean, as you say, the car is very young and we have very little experience for now. The team has a lot of experience, but with a car with little experience.
I think that the performance we showed in Qatar was a niddle. So (it was) luck, because we had the prologue which helped us to set up the car in a certain way, which was ideal for that race track. Now here, with very little track time, we don’t need through practice session or qualifying session to set up the race car, it’s a bit more of a challenge.
One of the very positive things is that it was reliable in Qatar, and that’s what we’re hoping for here and what we need at the end for circuirts like Le Mans, Spa or others late in the season, like Fuji and Bahrain.
There is definetly a lot of potential in it, and we can see it. Now we need to extract it someway.”
TSOS: Which circuit in the 2024 WEC season do you dread most because of its difficulty?
Mick Schumacher: “I don’t think there is any track that needs to be feared. For me it’s just a matter of experience, gaining experiences in tracks such like here in Imola or Sao Paulo, which are very narrow, very short… A potential danger for hypercars.”
TSOS: What kind of training do you do to prepare for an Endurance race? How important is nutrition?
Mick Schumacher: “In terms of preparation it’s quite the same. Maybe we’re focusing even more on our endurance training, but not super drastic changes for me. In terms of nutrition, I think it’s less what we eat than when we eat. We don’t have much time between the sessions, the stints, you try to sleep as well…
I prefer having time with my engineers or getting some sleep than eating. I still have to find my way in this Endurance enviroment.”
TSOS: What are your goals for the 24H of Le Mans 2024?
Mick Schumacher: “Since I’ve never been there, it’s very odd to say what my personal goals are. As a team, our goal is to be competitive and to finish, finish line is definetly what we want to see. We also have 2 very exprerienced drivers in the car with me, which are mature (Nicholas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxiviere). Both have driven a lot of Le Mans together.
I hope to learn a lot from them during that period, and I also hope that this would put us in a good position for a result.”
TSOS: Which teams do you consider direct rivals for this WEC season?
Mick Schumacher: “For us, it’s just a matter of looking on ourselves, trying to improve ourselves, putting ourselves in a position where we are happy with the way we have the strategy working, the way we set up the cars and the tools. We have a lot to do with ourselves before we can actually think about any competition out there.”
TSOS: You’ve done a nice free practice, but today, in qualifying, Alpine got some distances from other cars. How is your feel for tomorrow’s race?
Mick Schumacher: “Hard to say, it’s difficult to predict especially because conditions are changing. You don’t know where you stand in terms of strategy compared to the others. For us, it’s important that we focus on ourselves and make sure that everything we have planned happens.
Qualifying is usually such a small part of racing. But here, in Imola, it’s one of the most imports qualifying.”
