Raffaele Marciello, il pilota italiano del team BMW M Team WRT in WEC, ha risposto ad alcune nostre domande alla vigilia del weekend in Qatar.
Si scaldano i motori della competizione in WEC per la stagione 2025. Dopo il prologo dell’ultimo fine settimana, sia ora vicinissimi alla prima gara del campionato, la 1812 km del Qatar. Diverse novità si sono messe in mostra durante i primi test, dagli aggiornamenti delle vetture fino agli equipaggi dei rispettivi team.
Tra i tanti piloti che hanno riconfermato la loro partecipazione, vi è appunto Raffaele Marciello, pilota italiano naturalizzato svizzero con ormai 20 anni di carriera complessiva nel motorsport. Egli continuerà la sua permanenza nel BMW M Team WRT, a bordo della Hybrid V8.
Oltre a Dries Vanthoor, già suo compagno di vettura dallo scorso anno, Raffaele condividerà la V8 con l’ex pilota di F1 Kevin Magnussen, alla sua prima stagione in WEC.
Ringraziamo il già citato Raffaele Marciello, e ancora una volta il BMW M Team WRT, per averci concesso l’intervista, che riporteremo in seguito sia in italiano che in inglese.
La nostra intervista a Raffaele Marciello
Hai cominciato il tuo 2025 prendendo parte alla 24 ore di Daytona e alla 12 ore di Bathurst, che ha visto il dominio della BMW. Che aspettative hai invece sul 2025 della BMW nel WEC?
Raffaele Marciello: “Sicuramente non eravamo contenti del risultato finale a Daytona. Ma almeno abbiamo dimostrato di essere veloci, abbiamo lottato per la vittoria fino alla fine.
Nelle ultime tre o quattro gare, abbiamo fatto grandi miglioramenti. È sempre difficile dire se vogliamo vincere o non vincere. Voglio dire, tutti vogliono farlo, ma vogliamo dimostrare di essere migliorati rispetto all’anno scorso. Quindi, il nostro obiettivo primario è fare bene, sicuramente.
Anche Bathurst è stato sicuramente un buon risultato per noi con la doppietta. È stato fantastico. Sicuramente, non siamo mai completamente felici di arrivare secondi, ma alla fine è stato un ottimo risultato per tutti. Primo podio per Valentino (Rossi) nell’IGTC. Quindi sì, è stata una buona giornata.”
Hai un nuovo compagno di squadra in Kevin Magnussen. Com’è lavorare con lui, vista la sua vasta esperienza nel motorsport?
Raffaele Marciello: “È molto bello. Non l’ho mai conosciuto personalmente. Fin quando lo vedi in TV, magari potresti pensare che sia arrogante, o timido, ma appunto non puoi conoscerlo personalmente. E in realtà, lavorare con lui è molto bello.
Mi sento fortunato ad averlo in macchina con me. Possiamo condividere la nostra esperienza. È un ragazzo fantastico, molto divertente e simpatico quando sta con noi.”
Come si è evoluta la BMW M Hybrid V8 per il 2025? Ci sono stati miglioramenti importanti?
Raffaele Marciello: “Sì, i freni. Sicuramente, questo è stato un argomento importante per noi l’anno scorso. Ora vanno molto meglio. Abbiamo avuto modo di esplorare ancora più a fondo le prestazioni della macchina macchina. Per noi, questo è già un grande passo avanti
Anche finire Daytona con entrambe le macchine è un grande risultato. Quindi sì, la situazione è migliorata, soprattutto col freno.”
Guardando il calendario WEC, quale pista trovi più impegnativa?
Raffaele Marciello: “Conoscevo già quasi tutte le piste, tranne Le Mans. Penso che tutte siano difficili, o facili, diciamo in modi diversi.
Quella del Qatar la trovo abbastanza difficile, soprattutto per le GT, perché è ad alta velocità Diciamo che non c’è una pista che sia più difficile o più facile. Forse il Bahrain, perché c’è molto degrado delle gomme, e lì devi stare ancora più attento.”
Quali team consideri i tuoi principali concorrenti in questa stagione?
Raffaele Marciello: “Ferrari e Toyota, sicuramente, come vetture LMH. E poi Porsche che ha vinto l’anno scorso e anche quest’anno Daytona. Terrei d’occhio anche Alpine, visto che l’anno scorso si sono dimostrati spesso molto veloci. Anche Cadillac, con il nuovo team, sarà abbastanza forte.
Diciamo che lo saranno un po’ tutti.”
C’è qualche altra competizione motoristica che ti piacerebbe provare in futuro?
Raffaele Marciello: “Lo dico spesso, forse uno dei miei sogni è gareggiare nella Dakar. Magari in futuro, quando sarò un po’ più vecchio, anche perché è molto diverso da quello che sto facendo adesso.
Ma la posizione in cui mi trovo ora mi permette di prendere parte alle gare GT e Hypercar più importanti, e mi sta bene così.”

You started 2025 with strong showings at Daytona and Bathurst. What are your expectations for the WEC season?
Raffaele Marciello: “Daytona, for sure, we were not happy with the result at the end. But at least we showed that we were quick. I mean, we were fighting for the victory until the end. Last the last three, four rounds, we did we did a big improvement.
It’s always difficult to say if we want to win or not to win. I mean, everyone wants to do this, but we want to show we improved from last year. So, we want to do well, for sure.
Bathurst, also, was was for sure a good result for us with the one-two. It was amazing. For sure, we are never fully happy to finish second, but at the end, it it was a a great result for everyone. Bali, first podium in the IGTC. So, was uh yeah, it was a good day, for sure.”
You have a new teammate in Kevin Magnussen. What’s it like working with him, given his extensive motorsport experience?
Raffaele Marciello: “Actually, it’s very nice. I mean, I didn’t know him before, as a person. And when you see in the TV, maybe you could say that he’s arrogant, shy… I mean, you don’t know someone by TV. And actually, to work with him, it’s very nice.
I feel lucky to have him in the car with me. We we can share our experience. So, it’s very great guy and it’s very fun to have him with us.”
How has the BMW M Hybrid V8 evolved for 2025? Are there any major improvements?
Raffaele Marciello: “Yeah, the brakes. For sure, this was a was a big topic for us last year. And now it’s much better. In this, we were able to to explore different ways of performance, of how the car works. And this, for me, was a big improvement.
We improved massively in the reliability too. Both cars finished Daytona, and this was also a great achievement for us. It’s getting better in many areas, but for me the brake was the most important part.”
Looking at the WEC calendar, which track do you find the most challenging?
Raffaele Marciello: “I already knew almost every track, except Le Mans. I think everyone is difficult, or easy, let’s say, in in different ways.
Qatar, I find it quite hard with the traffic, because it’s high speed. So, it is very tricky with the GT. There is no track that is harder or easier. Maybe Bahrain, because there is a lot of tire deg, and there you have to take care of the tire a lot. So, maybe Bahrain, but only because of the tire deg.”
Which teams do you see as your main competitors this season?
Raffaele Marciello: “I think there is always Ferrari, and Toyota for sure, as LMH car. And then… Last year, Porsche won. They also won in Daytona. And, I believe Alpine. I mean, last year, they were sometimes very quick. Caddy (Cadillac), I mean, with the new team, also, they will be very strong.
So, yeah, a bit everyone, yeah.”
Finally, is there any other motorsport competition you’d like to try in the future?
Raffaele Marciello: “I often say, maybe one of my dreams is to do Dakar. Maybe in the future when I’m a bit older, also because it’s very different from what I’m doing now.
But, in the position where I am now, where I can do the biggest GT races, and Hypercar, it is probably the best place to be. So, yeah, except this dream of Dakar, I’m happy where I am.”
