Un altro protagonista della Cadillac in WEC ci ha concesso un’intervista prima dell’opener in Qatar, Earl Bamber, campione del mondo nel 2017.
Mancano due giorni esatti alla prima gara ufficiale del World Endurance Championship 2025, la 1812 km del Qatar. Quello di Lusail è un circuito fondamentale per i piloti, non solo per l’opener del campionato, ma anche per le sessioni di test effettuate nel Prologo.
È in questa occasione, infatti, che i team si mettono al lavoro con gli aggiornamenti effettuati in off-season, dalle vetture alle formazioni. Ne è un esempio il Cadillac Hertz Team Jota, frutto di una fusione che sta offrendo i primi grandi risultati ancora prima dell’inizio della competizione (entrambe le Hypercar hanno segnato i migliori tempi della 2° sessione, ndr.)
Dopo aver chiesto il punto di vista del campione del mondo di F1 Jenson Button, già membro del Team Jota ma alla prima volta in Cadillac, facciamo ora lo stesso con uno dei tre piloti che hanno vinto il titolo LMP1 nel 2017 a bordo della Porsche 919 Hybrid, il neozelandese Earl Bamber, al suo terzo anno a bordo della vettura statunitense.
Ringraziamo Earl Bamber e, nuovamente, il Cadillac Hertz Team Jota per averci concesso questa intervista, che riporteremo sia in italiano che in inglese.
La nostra intervista a Earl Bamber
Hai lavorato con Alex per tre anni, e quest’anno non sarete nello stesso equipaggio. Ora, lavorando con Jensen e Seb (il quale già conosci bene), come pensi che stiano andando le cose?
Earl Bamber: “Stanno andando molto bene. Ovviamente è solo il nostro primo fine settimana insieme.
Conosco Seb da molti anni anni, e ora siamo di nuovo compagni di squadra. Lui è incredibilmente veloce, ma è anche un maestro a risparmiare il carburante. Quando abbiamo fatto la DPI insieme, ho imparato molto guardando i suoi dati, quindi mi trovo già bene a lavorare con lui.
E poi, ovviamente, c”è Jensen, campione del mondo di Formula 1, e devo dire che è stato davvero bravo. Pare che la Cadillac si adatti molto al suo stile di guida, e penso dunque che sarà formidabile quest’anno.”
Quest’anno tornerete alla formula dei tre piloti per vettura. Un altro team, Porsche, sperimenterà la strategia della lineup da piloti piloti nelle gare da 6 ore a cominciare da Spa. Con quale formula ti trovi meglio?
Earl Bamber: “La formula con due piloti funziona abbastanza bene perché ottieni più tempo in pista, ma allo stesso tempo quella con tre ti prepara meglio per Le Mans e altre gare specifiche.
So che la Porsche sta usando effettivamente quella a tre per la maggior parte delle gare. Questo cambio frequente di strategia è ottimo, o almeno fino a un certo punto.
Ci sono comunque delle gare in cui per te può funzionare e altre in cui non può. È difficile da dire.”
Hai iniziato il tuo 2025 in pista partecipando alla tua 11° 24 ore di Daytona, la prima con la Cadillac V-Series.R. Possiamo dunque dire che hai avuto più tempo per studiarla con i nuovi aggiornamenti?
Earl Bamber: “Sì, devo dire che è andata molto bene. Adoro i ragazzi di Action Express. Abbiamo fatto una bella gara a Daytona, abbiamo guidato la gara all’inizio. Peccato per il guasto che abbiamo avuto successivamente, altrimenti saremmo stati in lizza.
Abbiamo fatto dei test fantastici a Sebring con Jack e Fred la settimana successiva, e ci sentiamo ben preparati, ma credo che valga lo stesso per tutti gli altri progetti di corse Cadillac. C’è un ottimo lavoro di squadra dietro, e questo ci dà molta forza.”
Durante la scorsa stagione, ci sono stati non pochi colpi di sfortuna che vi hanno penalizzato. Contate ora di riuscire a tappare quei buchi grazie alla fusione col team JOTA?
Earl Bamber: “Senza dover fare paragoni forzati, JOTA è un’organizzazione di livello mondiale con quello che fanno, piena di piloti appassionati. Lavorano duramente in quello che fanno. Direi che è ciò di cui questo programma WEC aveva bisogno.
Quest’anno hanno ottimi partner commerciali, e penso anche che passare da una a due auto sia di grande aiuto. Così abbiamo modo di raccogliere più dati, come abbiamo potuto vedere nel Prologo.”
Che prospettive e obiettivi vi siete prefissati per questa prima stagione come Cadillac Hertz Team Jota?
Earl Bamber: “Tutti vengono a queste gare per vincere, giusto? Noi non partecipiamo di certo per arrivare quinti, ma dobbiamo avere anche aspettative realiste con i risultati che ci ritroveremo. Ma, ehm, sai, alla fine della giornata, dobbiamo avere aspettative realistiche.
So per certo che un obiettivo chiave del nostro equipaggio è quello di fare punti in ogni gara, poi vedremo appunto cosa riusciremo a costruire gara dopo gara. Completando le gare senza problemi e fare punti ci porterà a una buona posizione in classifica.”
Earl Bamber’s interview
You’ve changed over from Alex, who you worked with over three years now, but just working with Jensen, and Seb (of course, you’ve known for a while), how have things gone along so far?
Earl Bamber: “Yeah, it’s been really good. Obviously, it’s just our first weekend together.
I know Seb from, from many, many years, being teammates, and he’s fantastically quick, a master of the fuel save. When we did DPI together, I learned a lot watching his data and stuff like that, so it’s nice to work with him.
And then obviously, Jensen, Formula One World Champion. He’s been really good. I think the Cadillac suits his style of driving very much. So, I think he’s going to be quite formidable this year.”
A three-car lineup this year for all the races. Last year it was two-car lineup, much like Porsche will do. Do you have a preference? How did that work for you last year?
Earl Bamber: “To be honest, it works quite well where you get more track time, but at the same time with three it prepares you better for Le Mans and stuff like that.
I know Porsche is doing actually three for most of the races. So, this to-ing and fro-ing of two or three is better. It’s hard to tell it. I think in some races it works for you, in some races it doesn’t work for you.”
You’ve already participated in the 24 Hours of Daytona. So, for you and Will Stevens, that gives you more time in the car, actually. You’re doing the full season on both, double duty. What are your thoughts about that?
Earl Bamber: “It’s been really good, actually. I love the Action Express guys. We had a great Daytona going. We led the race early on and, you know, it’s just a shame that we had the failure that we did.
I think we would have been in contention. We’ve had a really great test at Sebring the other week with Jack and Fred, and we feel really, really well prepared.
But I feel that’s the same at all the Cadillac racing projects at the moment that everyone’s well prepared. Everyone’s really working as one team together, which is really nice to see, and I think that’s strengthening us as a squad overall.”
What do you think about the working with JOTA now? Obviously not comparing with the past two years of the program, but the team has such history and has been doing this for a long time.
Earl Bamber: “Yeah, I mean, you don’t want to compare, but at the end of the day, JOTA’s a world-class organization with what they do, and it’s an organization that’s full of passionate racers. They definitely want to go racing.
They work really hard at what they do. I would say it’s what the program needed in the WEC. For this year, they’ve got great commercial partners as well, and I think expanding from one to two cars is a real help over here, too.
We get a lot more data and we’ve really seen the benefit, even just from the Prologue.”
What is your general outlook for the season?
Earl Bamber: “Everyone comes to these races and wants to win, right? And we don’t come here to finish fifth. At the end of the day, we need to have realistic expectations.
I know a key goal, especially on our car crew, is to score points at every race, so that’s going to be a key goal. And then, we’ll just build and see what the races bring. If you go through the race cleanly, you definitely get a good result, and then we’ll get a good championship result.”
